Dear Editor
Received: Friday, January 28, 2000

I wonder if you could help me? I have lost the current email address of a good friend of mine - an ex-pat living in Qatar - Shaun (and Kerrie) Pearson - and would dearly love to make contact. Do you know of this couple, and if so, is it possible to put us in touch? Shaun would recognize my name immediately.

Many Thanks,

Tim Pettingale

Dear Qatar-info team,
Received: December 1999

thank you for your message and Season`s greetings. I also wish you the best for 2000 and hope you will go on the same level with your magazine. It is always very interesting to read. It would be nice to have some information about Arabic lessons for expats: locations, costs, when the courses start ...(maybe a suggestion for your next edition....) I have introduced your magazine to some of my expat colleagues and they all found it very interesting.

All the best Christine Verreydt (Belgian citizen)

Dear Christine, I know that Arabic is taught at the French Cultural Center here in Doha. Check out their page in the magazine for their contact numbers and give them a call. We're very happy you enjoy Qatar-Info Magazine and appreciate your suggestions. Editor

I do not have a story to send but hope to have one in the future.

I am a headteacher in Scotland. I have visited Doha several times and I am keen to come on a study/work visit from September 2000. My employers may be interested in supporting this. I hoped you may be able to provide advice or contacts to help me get such a visit underway.

I am keen to carry out research in the field of education, to lecture or to write and produce materials. I have a proven track record. Any help would be gratefully received.

I hope you can fix that problem.

AAM MAARAFI

Dear AAM :-)

No pictures? At a last count we had more than 1200 pictures on our site. You might not have FLASH plug-in installed in your brawser so you can't see the animations? Ckeck the link on th bottom of the front page.

Hello
Received: July 1999

I am with the United States Air Force.

I had the unique opportunity to enjoy living in a tent near the Doha Airport during one of our deployments. I really liked the people and just about everything I saw. Of course the heat...well enough said.

I met a British woman while I was there in 1996. Her name is Amanda Atkinson. She worked for the British Embassy (Commercial Dept in the Toyota Bldg). I believe she is married now. I sure would like to hear from her again!

Anyone out there heard of her?

Hi
Received: 6th June 1999

At last I have found an honest, sensible and humorous web site about Qatar.

I am moving out in September to work in Doha and the thought of what I had decided to do filled me with trepidation, especially as I had only been able to find the official web sites.

However I have read all the articles on your site which has put my mind at ease. I will certainly recommend Qatar-Info to my sponsor as it is the best yet for down to earth help. As this will be the first time that I have worked abroad I would welcome any advice on offer.

Anyway congrats to all those involved with Qatar-Info and I will definitely tune in next month.

Congratulations on an excellent website! For somebody who lived in Qatar for almost five years, it was nice to read about all the places and things to do. It brought back a lot of good memories and also kept me up to date with new developments since I left Doha.

Keep up the great work!!

Reasonable Compensation
Received: 5th May 1999

My husband has recently been invited to apply for a job in Qatar. He is a computer professional with approximately 12 years of management experience. He has also been asked salary expectations. This contract includes the usual housing allowance, furniture allowance, medical, travel 6 weeks vacation, etc. What is a reasonable salary expectation or range of salary expectation?

What other things do we need to ask for? Any advice that could be offered would be appreciated. Great site!

I am a resident of Qatar and i was wondering if you know anything about building plans or any future plans of what they are going to build in Qatar. I am 14 years old and where i used to live there was an ice ring close to where we lived. It was very popular and enjoyable to go to and i thought it would be nice if you would see if you could contact anyone with this letter that could take this idea in a serious way. Most ex pats would i think would agree on an ice ring as well as most other countrymen and women.

If you could pass this on to any one who could do anything about this letter, i would be very happy.

Thank you for reading this letter.

Cud u modify the site of qatar-info such that if we want to read the entire magazine one does not need to come back to the main page all the time.

Headings in the left hand column should do the trick

Ramona

Ramona,

That's a great idea and we will implement it soon.

We encourage other readers to come forward and tell us what they think of the site, and what can we do to improve it.

My wife and I shall be coming to Qatar in the near future for a year or so.

Claire, my wife, needs an address and contact name for somewhere that will invigilate UK higher education exams. Claire was told to contact the British Embassy but I am sure there must be a school / college in Doha that does this sort of thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello
Received: 8th April 1999

I am a single female American moving to Doha.

I have heard all kinds of things about the area, ranging from" very conservative, you must be covered and you will be bothered if you go out on your own", to "you'll be surprised, it's pretty international and for the most part you can do and dress as you would at home".

What's the real scoop? What should I pack?? Also, being from Florida, I am used to hot weather, but as it is a drier climate, does it get cool in the evenings?

Lastly, as I do not know anyone in the region, are there any good expat organizations to join where I might meet people like myself? I don't know anything about the expat community in Doha. Many thanks for your help!!

Best regards, Debbie

I am interested in finding out about job opportunities in the health field in Qatar. I am a Canadian ex-pat currently working in Kuwait. I am in the healthcare field and my husband is a teacher. We are interested in staying overseas and a friend of ours who recently visited Qatar had many positive things to say about the country. If you could possibly put me in touch with someone in the medical/healthcare field, I would greatly appreciate it!!

Hello
Received: 2nd March. 1999

My company is planning to move us to Qatar during the summer. It should be a 3 to 4 year assignment.

At present my son (12 years old) races on the National BMX (Bicycle Moto-Cross) circut in the United States. BMX is a sport which has been around for 20+ years in the US. It is ran on a closed track with sharp turns and jumps. There are classes for all skill levels and ages. I run the "Old Man" class from time to time.

My question: Do you know of any BMX tracks in the region? Do you think there would be interest in starting a track in Doha for the kids to race.

Where would be the appropriate starting place for gathering information or stirring interest in this sport?

PS: I LOVE this site. Very good information.

Thank you,

Thank God my wife found your site!
Received: 12th Feb. 1999

We have been trying for a while to find some meaningful information about Qatar.

Yours seems like a real good source.

In a nut shell, we are contemplating a move to Qatar. I am a banker working for a major bank in California. My wife is a school teacher. We have two young children (9 and 7).

I have a good financial offer from a Qatari bank. However, we are hesitant to leave a stable and established career and life style to something completely foreign, specially for my wife. Safety is another concern.

I had a chance to visit Qatar last November. My impression is it is too small of a place and there is not much to do that boredom may be an issue.

We are very interested in hearing from Americans living in Qatar about their experience, advice, what to do and not to do, and any other input.

By the way, we think the way your site is arranged is excellent.

Thank you.

Mohsen and Marilyn Moustafa

Recruitment agencies in Qatar
Received: 5th Feb. 1999

I would very much appreciate your forwarding to me the names and contacts numbers of recruitment agencies within Doha, as I intend to relocate within the latter half of this year.

Thanks.

Anne McAdam

Dear Ms McAdam

The only recruitment agency worth contacting in Qatar is Key Resources. Their phone number is (0974) 353301. Contact Jill Mc Carthy or Jane Bloom. Actually, if you'd looked, this contact is given in our Employment section, in the Practical Information part of the site! This agency covers largely secretarial and accounts positions.
We don't recommend relocating here unless you have to at present, as the work situation is somewhat grim for western females . Cutbacks in the oil business have led to a lot of redundancies and there are very few jobs around. Pay is certainly less than in the Emirates, and be warned - local hire in Qatar means no air fare, no housing allowance, no sponsorship, i.e. no perks whatsoever. Unless you are accompanying your spouse and we presume you are, you would be well advised to stay away!

Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Hello

I am a high school freshman doing a geography report on your country.
I go to Libertyville Community High School in Libertyville, Illinois, USA.
I have to research your country-draw maps (agriculture, transportation, natural resources, population, etc.) do a historical timeline, make a travel pamphlet, and more for my semester project.

I have started my research and found your web sites on the Internet. I was wondering if you could help me with current information. I have accessed several of your web pages and noticed this site and your e-mail address.

Do you have an address that I could contact for a printed brochure or magazines that I could use for study and use in this project? You can contact me at this web site at your convenience. I will continue to look at the many web sites you have on the Internet

Thank You
Andy Margules

Anyone willing to help Andy with his research?

Also, as on limited budget....any ideas as to budget travel.....have found everything from 3K to around $1500 american.......any suggestions as to where to look for budget fares or best time to travel there...

I look forward to hearing from you...and learning more about a country I have just recently realized is quite extroordinary.

Dear Barbara

To visit your friends in Qatar you will need a visit visa. This can be aranged either by your friends (if you're staying with them) or by the hotel. Check out our visas section for more information.

For the best air fares, check out our sponsor, Qatar Airways.

Hello from Canada.
Received: 28. Dec. 1998

I was browsing on the net and decided to check out what was available for Qatar and saw your new web site. I was visitor #00340 and will tune into your site from time to time.

I was in Doha from Dec 1990 til March 1991. I hope some day to visit that area with my wife when we fully retire. While there, I met a very nice couple, Dave & Mary Hardy. If you know them, would you give them a call and pass along our regards. If they have an email address, I would love to have it so that we can communicate more...

The weather here for the festive season has been very nice with snow, but not too much. It enables me to get out on my cross-country skiis daily. It is great exercise.

To all of you in Qatar, have a wonderful 1999.
